Kathy Southard Dechen Chöling Head of Personnel

At the heart of Dechen Chöling is a community of practitioners. The daily activity of community life is regarded as inseparable from spiritual practice.
Working at DCL means taking care. Taking care of the land, the château, the shrines, the food, the flags, the phone, the programmes, the money, the toilets, the tents, and the people visiting and living here. One must open one’s heart to see how. To integrate everyone’s capabilities we have to get to know each other and – relax. Through the constant practice of working together in various ways everybody has great opportunities to grow and develop. Along this path we share lots of tears and laughter. Working at a practice centre is a way to not only deepen one’s own personal practice but also to help make the dharma available for others.

We are 20 staff living here in the winter and we increase to 45 in the summer, then partially living in tents. People stay for three months to three years normally.
Dechen Chöling is a place of beauty and bliss, the atmosphere is marked by timeless continuity of change and the willingness of everyone to create the space in which we can work with ourselves and others. Three months might feel like three years or vice versa.
